A Historic Home Transformation

Every once in a while a job comes along that completely moves us. The Hinckley home was certainly one of those projects.

This remodel, designed by Guggenheim Architecture + Design Studio, honors the historic character of this 1920’s home while updating it for modern living.

The home was originally designed by Ellis Lawrence, the first dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Oregon. This holds special significance for Principal Designer + Design Director Jenny Guggenheim and her Principal Architect husband Jeff as UofO is their Alma Mater.

“Our goal was to create more functional spaces while remaining sensitive to the home’s 1920’s era.  Extra comforts such as a steam shower and heated floors are behind the scenes luxuries but they do not disrupt the historic visual,” Jenny explains.

“We are fortunate to work on many incredible projects but something was special about this one,” says Dirk Sullivan of Hawthorne Tile. “It was the perfect combination of an artistic home owner that wanted something very special, a very gifted architect/designer and a team of highly skilled craftspeople.”

Working as a Tight Team of Experts

Jenny says she was impressed with the skills Right Angle Construction brought to this gorgeous home. “Right Angle Construction easily understood the expected level of detail on this historical home and utilized craftspeople with the same eye to bring the project completion. We worked primarily with Darren and he is very solution-oriented and willing to talk through detailing until everyone on the team is satisfied with the result.”

Ensuring the homeowner and the entire project team is part of the process is so important to us, especially in a project like this. This remodel involved many complex details. Older homes often feature spaces that are smaller in scale, but to transform the home for modern luxury living many new elements needed to be added in, like the steam shower. Getting every detail correct is crucial to the work we do – especially when we’re working to preserve the home’s historic character.

“The key to the success was communication,” Dirk explains. “So many design elements and trades overlapped and were literally woven together. I couldn’t be prouder of how this project came together.”

Building an Heirloom Quality Home

A quality build was paramount in this project. Jenny explains: “We expect these spaces to stand the test of time. The materials, fixtures, and fittings were all selected to be heirloom quality.”

The team at Chown Hardware assisted in selecting the very best timeless hardware and plumbing fixtures. Gorgeous tilework by the experts at Hawthorne Tile brought the entire project together.
